Course Description:

This two-day, intensive course provides a comprehensive, hands-on experience, equipping participants with the knowledge to test and evaluate RF signals from a radio transmitter’s output to a receiver. The course begins by laying down the fundamental theories of antennas and transmission lines and then progresses to practical, hands-on problem-solving for common field issues. It’s structured to cater to both beginners and experienced technicians and engineers, offering insights that surpass the limited scope of traditional line sweep methods and delve into the full spectrum of antenna performance.

Topics for discussion include a broad range of essential concepts and techniques:

  • Antenna types, mounting methods, signal propagation, and gain/loss calculations.
  • Understanding decibels, pattern distortions, SWR (Standing Wave Ratio), return loss, and distance-to-fault.
  • Practical aspects include impedance matching, bandwidth, efficiency, power levels, and static and dynamic antenna tilting.
  • Choosing the right components for optimal performance, understanding beamwidth and polarization, and managing mixed-use towers.
  • Selecting appropriate transmission lines, using antenna diversity, splitters, couplers, and taps, and ensuring lightning protection.

The hands-on exercises are designed to reinforce learning through real-world applications:

  • Mastering the fundamentals of testing using Reflectometers and RF Wattmeters.
  • Calibrating equipment, identifying problems, measuring distance-to-fault, conducting system sweeps, operating Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR), and honing troubleshooting skills.

By the end of this course, participants will be well-equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for thorough RF signal testing and antenna system evaluation.
